Hello

The UK's new Industrial Strategy targets eight high-value growth sectors, the IS8, but purely using outdated SIC codes and legacy data only gives an approximate view of these sectors. That's where we come in.

Working with The Productivity Institute, government, and industry, we've mapped the IS8 using real-time company-level data. Aligned with the government's official sector definitions, our Real-Time Industrial Classifications (RTICs) and Real-Time SIC Codes (RSICs) provide a clear, up-to-date view of these sectors.

They're now live on the platform and included in your licence.

        • Description

This is the UK's advanced manufacturing sector. It includes activities such as advanced materials, robotics, semiconductors, photonics and space manufacturing.

        • Methodology

Defined using multiple RTICs including Advanced Materials and Semiconductors, developed in partnership with DSIT and Innovate UK. RSICs were reviewed but cannot provide the necessary detail due to limitations in the SIC structure. RTICs offer a more accurate, real-time view of this complex, high-value sector.

More information can be found in our Industrial Strategy Mapping Guide.

This is the UK's clean energy sector. It includes renewable generation, cleantech, battery supply chains and technologies enabling the transition to net zero.

        • Methodology

Mapped using RTICs to avoid broad or misleading SIC categories that group clean and fossil energy together. RTICs allow precise identification of relevant technologies and companies.

This is the UK's defence sector. It includes companies operating in land, sea, air, cyber and dual-use defence technologies.

        • Methodology

Mapped using RTICs and RSICs. Defence is complex due to dual-use business models. This definition is being developed further with ADS Group, through a forthcoming RTIC.

You'll notice something new in this data: Real-Time SIC Codes (RSICs). These are our machine learning-based SIC codes that classify companies based on what they actually do—not what they say they do.

Normally, RSICs are part of a paid upgrade. But for this project, we're making them available to all users, no matter your license level.
